The Panorama Tour - The Toughest Race On Tar

The Art of the Breakaway: Stage Two of the PPS Panorama Tour 2019

Christiaan Janse van Rensburg & Theuns van der Bank (Hartlief Deli P/B Powerbar S) for the Traditional Tour and Callum Ormiston & Asher Biggs (ProTouch) for the Elite event make short work of Stage Two of the 14th edition of the PPS Panorama Tour.

Stage Two at 72km is shorter than Stage One, but the numerous sharp climbs and 1546m of ascent means pacing, and strategy plays a big part in who claims the win.

In the Traditional Tour: on the outward leg to Hazyview, the peloton stayed relaxed with a few brief breaks. It was at the turn around from Kiepersol back to White River, where the short sharp climbs back home begin in earnest that Christiaan Janse Van Rensburg and Theuns Van Der Bank decided to break away. The hills kept coming, beating back the attack and widening the gap to 3 minutes 38 seconds. Janse Van Rensburg and Van Der Bank crossed the line comfortably and with a final time of 01:59:15. They maintain their spot as the top Sub Vets with an overall time of 05:08:28 after Stage Two.

Janse Van Rensburg comments on their second successful breakaway, "We went in planning to save our energy, at one stage we decided it was time to make a break. Together we kept a good rhythm and tempo going, it worked, and we managed to stay away."

In the Elite Event: similar strategies were at play. At the turn around from Kiepersol back towards White River  Enza Proud Beginners' Thokazani Mglangu and Juries Titus made a determined break. They maintained a 1-minute 14-second gap up until the final 10km where an attack brought them back into the fold. Out of the attack ProTouch pair, Callum Ormiston and Asher Biggs took the win in a time of 01:59:37. They were followed by Team NAD/Demacon's Barend Burger and Nico Bell second (1:59:38) and Sampada's Ryan Terry and Jan Montsioa third (01:59:39).

In the Traditional Tour: Demacon's Kim le Court and Carla Oberholzer won the top spot for Stage Two in the Women's category with a time of 02:13:38, with teammates Suzan Cronje and Lynette Burger second (2:23:51) and Tokem MT's Stacey Paul & Gillian Fourie (04:02:09)

BSC-DDMedia's Grant Edmiston and Parys Edwards took their second win in the Mixed with a time of 2:03:51. Bekker Steel-Clover's Dana Coetzee and Sanet Smal placed second (2:05:15), with Dormakaba's Matthew Stamatis and Samantha Sanders third (2:05:15).
